Rosannagh Scarlet Esson is a contemporary British artist and designer with a background in visual arts and theatre. Her practice considers the alchemy of painting through exposure to elemental forces, exploring themes of wildness, climate, ecological succession and the complex relationship between mankind and nature.

She graduated from Oxford Brookes in 2016 with First Class Honours in Fine Art, and was awarded the Fine Art Dissertation Prize for the best critical submission in her year. Since graduating she has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is held in a number of private collections across the UK. Collections include The Atlantic Institute, Oxford University, St. Paul’s Girls School, London, and Dorfold Hall, Cheshire. In 2024, Rosannagh was selected as a Soho House Fellow.

Outside of the studio, she has worked in various creative capacities with a number of artists, galleries and organisations as a curator, designer and consultant. Through these roles, as well as that of being an artist, Rosannagh is dedicated to promoting environmental causes through her work, and is becoming increasingly recognised as someone committed to shining a spotlight on climate change and biodiversity loss.

  • Practice

A deep reverence for nature is infused into Rosannagh's work through an alchemical painting language that focuses on the symbolism of material and the transformative effects of the elements. Her expanded painting process considers the alchemy of material, combining traditional and unconventional painting materials in experimental ways that work with, rather than against, the metamorphic effects of fire, water, weather, ice, time or gravity. In celebrating and collaborating with the elements, her work naturally also explores human impact on the environment, capturing the passion and melancholy of living at a time of climate crisis. Themes explored include wildness, ecological succession, alchemical symbolism, post-human landscapes and Deep Ecology.
